United Missionary Primary Teachers' Training Institute(A Government Aided Institute)

---Since 1910---

About Us

The United Missionary Primary Teachers’ Training Institute (UMPTTI) is an esteemed institution which caters to the need of producing dedicated, well trained and disciplined teachers. It has been one of the most renowned institutions for Primary Teachers’ Training in West Bengal, since its foundation, in the year 1908. The Institute has seen many successful batches of teachers walk out of the gates as leaders, guides and facilitators.
The Institution stands upright with a verdant lawn and garden which renders the premises with a tranquil environment for the students to learn and practice their lessons. The Institute also makes sure that social as well as spiritual discipline is taught to produce honest, sincere and principled teachers for the welfare and advancement of our society.
We, at United Missionary Teachers’ Training Institute sincerely hope that all students from UMPTTI become not only teachers, but also facilitators who would provide assistance to students and grant the learners some space to let the spirits of creativity and innovation flourish. We extend our heart-felt greetings to all dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff for their contributions.

Our History

In 1908-09 a few dedicated Christian members of the Baptist Missionary Society and London Missionary Society felt it necessary to have trained teachers to educate the children in Primary Schools. Hence, in 1909 with the personal enthusiasm and influence of Miss Brooke the then Inspectress of Schools for Hindu Widows a Senior Teachers Training College was introduced and the educational Policy of Lord Curzon was implemented. This brought about the two Government Teachers’ Training Colleges, viz., Hindu Female Training College and Muslim Female Training College. Presently, the Hindu Female Training College has been transferred to Krishnanagar under the name “D. L. Ray Memorial” and the Muslim Female Training College has been transferred to Durga Road, Hastings House, Calcutta under the name Women’s Teacher Training College.
In 1910, January the 28th by the direct patronage of BMS & LMS along with a strong support from the Diocesan Schools and Church of Scotland Mission this College, the United Missionary Training College (now United Missionary Primary Teachers’ Training Institute) was formed at 1, Ballygunge Circular Road, Calcutta (now Kolkata). The College which started with 14 residential students has now about 100 students both residential and day scholars respectively. Presently, there are three Church Bodies in the Governing Body, viz. Baptist Missionary Society, Church of North India and Christian Service Society.Over the years this College has trained and produced teachers with a strong character of Christian discipline, mannerisms and marked academic results. In the years to come, the College will be able to accommodate and teach a large number of teachers to meet the demands of our times.
